THIS CLASS IS AN INTERMEDIATE CLASS
The prerequisite for this class is:
Jeannie’s Beginner Machine Quilting Class
You will need to sign up for this class TWO weeks in advance in order to receive your packet of stencils at the class. If you sign up later than that, you may have use of my stencils but will receive yours at a later date.
If you have dabbled in Machine Quilting and think you are beyond the Beginner class, think about taking Jeannie’s “Machine Quilting Essentials Lecture” before you take this Intermediate class. This is a great way to bone up on your Machine Quilting knowledge. Jeannie shares with you her tips and tricks along with information about threads, needles, batting, tension, how to make a proper quilt sandwich, and the list goes on!
This is another in Jeannie’s series Intermediate Machine Quilting. This class focuses on Stencils…how to choose appropriate quilting stencils, how to mark the quilt using the stencils, and how to fit a border stencil into a border and creating a corner for the border if the stencil does not provide one.
Before creating your quilt sandwich, you need to mark your quilt-top fabric with some straight lines. These will simulate piecing in a real quilt. You will be stitching on these lines once you sandwich your layers.
Using diagram below, the Sewline Fabric Pencil, and centering these lines on your quilt top fabric, draw four 8” “blocks” in the 4-patch pattern. Then draw a 2” border all around the four blocks. Then draw a second 2” border around the first. And lastly draw a 6” border around the second 2” border. Your final measurement should be 36” square. This should all center on your 40” x 40” quilt top and be done before you sandwich your quilt. These are your “pretend” seam-lines.
Sandwich your quilt-top, batting, and backing and pin baste. Using the light colored thread and walking foot, machine stitch in all the drawn seam-lines simulating “stitch in the ditch.”
Create two practice sandwiches by layering two 20” x 20” pieces of fabric with one 20” x 20” piece of batting. Pin baste with a safety pin in each corner and one in the middle. Repeat for second practice piece.
Bring your 40” x 40” stitched sandwich and your 20” x 20” practice sandwiches to class.
