Have you ever wondered how quilters create those beautiful appliqué quilts by machine? In this class we will explore various techniques for machine appliqué. In class, you will create a flower block with all the techniques. If you choose, at home, you can make the three additional blocks while these new techniques are fresh in your mind. Class will include freezer paper method, fusing, buttonhole, satin stitch and some other surprises. Don’t miss this exciting class.

Supply List:

  • Sewing machine that can do a zig zag stitch
    • Don't have a sewing machine and want to attend this class? Please call our store to reserve one of our loaner machines. Limited Availability.
  • All machine attachments, manual, cord, foot pedal, extension table
  • Open toe foot for YOUR make/model of machine. May need to purchase separately
  • Machine Needles Topstitch 90/14 AND Microtex 60/8
  • Pinking Shears (optional)
  • Several Bobbins Including One Empty Bobbin
  • Freezer Paper
  • Basic Sewing kit
  • Glue Stick
  • Paper scissors, fabric scissors
  • Pencil
  • Ruler with a 45 degree line on it (can share with a friend)
  • Masking tape
  • Rotary Cutter (can share with a friend)
  • Sharpie Fine Tip Marker
  • Medium-small cutting mat – at least 12 inches (Can share with a friend)
  • Removable Fabric Marker for background fabric

Thread

For the Decorative thread that shows on the applique you will need these colors:

  • Thread to match the lower part of the flower
  • Thread to match or compliment leaves
    • You can go two different routes for these Decorative threads, Soft Matte OR Shiny 
      However, I suggest you be consistent within one project.
  • Soft matte cotton look - your choices are found at the back of the store
    • Sulky Blendables, 30,  a thicker thread for a bold look
    • Superior’s King Tut, 40, a medium thick thread, OR
    • Superior’s So Fine, 50, the thinnest of the So Fine 
      OR
  • Shiny Look - found at the front of the store
    • Robison Anton Polyester Embroidery thread – 40
    • Isacord Polyester Embroidery thread – 40 

You will also need the following threads:

    • Fine thread for bobbins – I use grays and beiges, they are great for disappearing
      • one to blend with background
      • one to blend with lower flower
      • one to blend with flower leaves

Piecing Thread the Color of Lower Leaves

  • Clear thread such as Superior’s MonoPoly Thread OR YLI Invisible Thread (found at the back of the store)
  • Superior’s Charlotte’s Fusible Web Thread OR YLI Fusible Thread (found at the back of the store)

The fabric list below is for one block. For four blocks list, please contact Jeannie
**Fabric should be PRE-WASHED and spray starched ONLY ON RIGHT SIDE OF FABRIC (RSF)

  • ½ yard or fat quarter for background 
  • 9” x 15” piece for stem
  • 9” x 9” piece for top of flower
  • 9” x 9” piece for bottom of flower
  • Leaves – need at least two fabrics. I used three 
    • 9” x 9” each piece of leaf fabric
  • 12” x 12” piece of scrap fabric for practicing stitching
  • ¾ yard Pellon Tear Away stabilizer 
  • Small scraps of Wonder Under or Steam-A-Seam
  • ½ yard for border fabric
  • ¾ yard for backing (for finishing at home)

Preclass Homework

  • Preshrink, starch (ONLY ON RIGHT SIDE OF FABRIC) and press fabric. (I love starched fabric. I wil bring starch also.)
  • Cut background fabric into one piece  14” x 16” (BRING LEFTOVERS TO CLASS ALSO)
  • Cut Pellon Tear Away into one piece  14” x 16” (BRING LEFTOVERS TO CLASS ALSO)
  • Pre-wind bobbins with your fine bobbin threads – start with just half full bobbins (BRING IN ONE EMPTY BOBBIN)
  • Charlotte’s Fusible Web Thread – need half a bobbin (IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE WINDING THIS BOBBIN, BRING TO CLASS AND I WILL HELP)

Familiarize yourself with your machine and the following:
1.) Changing upper tension.
2.) Locating your various zig zag stitches. We will be doing a satin stitch.
3.) How to change the length and width of the zig zag (We will go over this in class).

Class Cancellation Policy 

To reserve a seat, all Pocono Sew & Vac classes must to be paid in full before the class begins. In the event that a student needs to cancel their reservation for a class, they should notify PS&V at least 7 days in advance to be eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made 2-6 days before class will be issued a store credit.  Cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance will not be eligible for a refund or store credit.
